Coercion Of An Online Learning System During The COVID-19 Outbreak

JAKARTA - The Provincial Government (Pemprov) of DKI Jakarta issued a policy to eliminate teaching and learning activities in schools. Starting from kindergarten, elementary, junior high, high school / WMK to universities in all areas of DKI Jakarta to be closed for two weeks to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

At first glance this rule looks good, to prevent the spread of the coronavirus outbreak. But unfortunately, the implementation of an online-based teaching system is considered by many to be ineffective, due to the unpreparedness of the school.

According to Indra Charismiadji's education initiative, educational facilities in all schools in Jakarta are not ready to implement an online classroom system. Only a few of the schools have online-based teaching and learning systems.

"This (policy) forces schools to make optimal use of technology which has been lacking. Schools are not ready for this technology-based system," Indra told VOI, Monday, March 16.

With this unpreparedness, the provincial government policy is deemed very ineffective. Many students do not use their free time to study because of minimal supervision and instead choose to play.

"Finally, the students went on holiday without any education and there have been many complaints from parents," said Indra.

In addition, a public policy analyst who is also a lecturer at Trisakti University, Trubus Rahadiansyah, said that many students or their students have difficulty following the online teaching and learning system. The reason is, not all students have the ability.

In addition, many of them are also deprived on the economic side. So, they prefer not to take part in the teaching and learning process.

"There are many factors that cause it, one of which is because of the economy. They have difficulty in costs if they have to download large files or other things," said Trubus.

On the side of the teaching staff or lecturers, it is considered that many have experienced technological illiteracy. Moreover, the use of the online system in teaching and learning activities is only applied to certain subjects.

For that, he said, it would be better for the government through the Ministry of Education and Culture to provide instruction regarding the online system. So, later the system can be used continuously.

"This epidemic is of a temporary nature, but it does not rule out the same things happening. With this system, we can anticipate it," said Trubus.

To date, there are around 1.5 million students in Jakarta. 145,000 of them are high school / vocational high school students who will take the National Examination next Monday. With this rule, the exam is also postponed until an undetermined time limit.
