EU Council President Says European Countries Are Ready To Admit Palestine

JAKARTA - EU Council President Charles Michel on Friday revealed that Spain, Ireland, Malta, and Slovenia are ready to recognize the Palestinian state once appropriate conditions are met.

Michel said it would be used as an influence to initiate peace negotiations.

He conveyed this to reporters at the end of the EU summit in Brussels and stressed the importance of starting the Palestinian recognition process.

He also emphasized the need for joint steps from both parties to achieve this goal.

Michel highlighted that although debates about Palestinian recognition were not fully discussed in recent discussions, this remains an important decision that must be considered by each EU member state.

He confirmed that some members had recognized Palestine as a sovereign state and stressed the importance of starting a structured process towards recognition and the importance of acknowledging the steps taken by authorities, particularly in Israel, as part of the process.

"This is not a topic we just discussed yesterday afternoon, but we have discussed in-depth the solutions of the two countries and the goal is two nations that live side by side in security, namely mutual recognition, that is the goal and that is why we coordinate with all our member countries," he said, quoting Antara.

"There is a process so that this can be seen as an influence to take steps and support efforts to restart peace negotiations," Michel continued.
