The Ministry Of Industry Records 54 Smelter Industry Operating In Indonesia Until March 2024

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) noted that until March 2024 there were 54 smelters industries that were already operating in Indonesia.

This was stated by the Director General of Metal, Machinery, Transportation Equipment and Electronics (ILMATE) of the Ministry of Industry, Taufiek Bawazier in a Hearing Meeting with Commission VII DPR RI at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Tuesday, March 19.

"We can report that the smelter industry until March 2024 has a total of 54 smelters. The operating nickel smelter is 44, there are 2 copper smelters, 3 aluminum smelters, 2 aluminum smelters, 3 tin smelters. So, a total of 54 smelters," said Taufiek.

Taufiek said, as many as 54 smelter industries operate in a number of parts of Indonesia. For alumina, it has operated in West Kalimantan and Riau Islands with a total of 3 smelters. Then, aluminum has been operating in Central Sulawesi and North Sumatra Provinces with a total of 2 smelters and nickel has been operating in Banten, North Maluku, South Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi and Southeast Sulawesi, with a total of 44 smelters.

Then, for copper, it has operated in East Java and Maluku with a total of 2 smelters and for tin, it has operated in the Bangka Belitung Islands with a total of 3 smelters.

In addition, there are 21 other smelter industries that are still in the construction stage with a total of 19 nickel smelters, 1 copper smelter and 1 alumina smelter. And there are 7 nickel smelters that are still in the feasibility study stage (FS).

The nickel smelter is also the largest compared to the smelter and refining plant for other metal minerals in the country.

The smelter under the auspices of the Directorate General of ILMATE at the Ministry of Industry is a standalone facility. Meanwhile, the smelter whose integrated character is under the auspices of the Directorate General of Mineral and Coal (Minerba) of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM).

"We from the Ministry of Industry will continue to focus on increasing downstreaming," he said.
