Not Mercedes-Benz, Toyota Land Cruiser Is Japan's Most Stolen Vehicle

JAKARTA - Toyota Land Cruiser has its own charm thanks to its dashing design and impressive performance both on highways and off-roads. However, this advantage also caught the attention of vehicle thieves.

In Japan, this model managed to maintain the number one position as the most stolen vehicle for three consecutive years.

Reporting from Carscoops, Wednesday, March 13, the number of Land Cruiser theft cases has reached 383, followed by Alphard with 364 cases and Prius with 307 cases. Following in the top five, there is Lexus LX with 120 cases and Toyota HiAce with 60 cases.

A total of 9 of the 10 most stolen cars are Toyota and Lexus vehicles. In 10th place, there are vehicles from Mercedes-Benz with a total of 37 cases, although the models were not disclosed.

According to the General Insurance Association of Japan, the data was collected from 21 insurance companies operating in the region. The top ten models cover 55.7 percent of the total cases of car theft. In 2023, 2,597 cases were reported, slightly decreased compared to 2,656 cases in 2022.

Furthermore, 58.5 percent of car theft cases occurred at night because the perpetrators took advantage of the lack of lighting and lack of crowds during that period, as reported by Response.

The latest Toyota Land Cruiser in Japan is sold at prices ranging from 5.1 million yen to 7.3 million yen (equivalent to IDR 538.8 million to IDR 771 million) for gasoline engines. In addition, the SUV is also available in diesel variants with prices ranging from 7.6 million yen to 8 million yen (around IDR 802.5 million to IDR 844.7 million).
