China Proposes UN Security Council Reform
JAKARTA - Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi discussed United Nations Security Council (DK) reform efforts in the 78th round of the Intergovernmental Negotiations of the UN General Assembly taking place in Beijing.
"The UN Security Council's reforms are part of the integral of the UN reform as a whole. China supports the United Nations' DK reform so that they can fulfill crucial responsibilities in maintaining international peace and security," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning when delivering a statement to the media in Beijing, China., February 29.
Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with the chairman with Intergovernmental Negotiations namely Tareq M. AM Albanai and Alexander Marschik. Albanai are Permanent Representatives of Kuwait at the United Nations while Marschik is the Permanent Representative of Austria at the United Nations.
Negotiations on UN DK reform efforts have been ongoing at the United Nations since 1995.
The Plenary Informal Session of the UN General Assembly then launched the Intergovernmental Negotiations process represented by various negotiating groups but is still opposing each other, hampering the UN DK reform process.
"We believe that the UN DK reform will effectively increase the representation and opinions of developing countries and provide opportunities for more small and developing countries to participate in decision making in the organization," said Mao Ning.
China, said Mao Ning, also wants UN DK to uphold the solidarity and cooperation of the international community and UN member countries to seek consensus.
"This reform must benefit all member states, not only attaching importance to the interests of a handful of people because the United Nations is the organization with the widest base in the world and therefore capable of representing all countries in the world," said Mao Ning.

Mao Ning said China assessed that the UN DK does not only represent the interests of permanent members of the UN DK but also developing countries and small countries can have more chance of taking part in the decision-making process at the UN DK.
"Regarding how reforms should be carried out specifically, this requires serious consultation among UN members and accommodating the wishes of the countries so that all members can benefit from these reforms," said Mao Ning.
In the 78th round of Intergovernmental Negotiations, Wang Yi said China supports stable progress in the United Nations DK reform in the right direction, increasing representation and the voices of developing countries.
In addition, it also provides opportunities for more small and moderate countries to participate in decision making and allows all member countries to benefit from this. from reform.
Wang Yi said that international community solidarity and cooperation need to be placed in an important position and seek the widest consensus of the international community.
