PTPN III And Pertamina NRE Cooperation On Carbon Credit Commercialization

JAKARTA - Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) collaborated with PT Perkebunan Nusantara III (PTPN III) in a carbon credit commercialization project.

This collaboration aims to increase its contribution to efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support environmental sustainability. The signing of the cooperation was carried out by the Director of Strategic Planning and Business Development of Pertamina NRE, Fadli Rahman and Deputy President Director of PTPN III, Denaldy Mulino Mauna.

For information, this collaboration focuses on the commercialization of carbon credit from the Sei Mangkei Biogas Power Plant (PLTBg). PLTBg is one of the power plants with renewable energy that can be calculated on its carbon loans from two sides, namely from the creation of clean energy as well as from the capture of methane gas which cannot be separated into the atmosphere.

Pertamina NRE and PTPN III have established strategic cooperation since 2019 by building PLTBg Sei Mangkei. We continue this strategic collaboration to a higher level through the commercialization of carbon loans from PLTBg Sei Mangkei. This is a form of consistency between the two parties in demonstrating the commitment to the energy transition to net zero emissions 2060," said Fadli, quoted on Saturday, February 3.

Fadli said, the PLTBg generation process utilizes Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) waste from PTPN III's palm oil mill which is processed at the Wastewater Processing Installation (IPAL).

The POME waste is accommodated in a closed reservoir (covered lagoon) so that it does not cause emissions because the methane gas produced by POME waste cannot be separated into the atmosphere.

Furthermore, the methane gas is then processed to produce electrical energy with a capacity of 2.4MW. The initial estimate of carbon credit that can be generated from this project is 15 thousand to 25 thousand tons of CO2 per year.

Meanwhile, Denaldy Mulino said, the sustainable Plantation sector plays an important role in environmental conservation.

"This collaboration provides us with the opportunity to optimize the environmental benefits of our activities, as well as open the door to diversifying income through carbon credit," Denaldy continued.

This agreement also includes cooperation in the study and development of innovation and the latest technology to increase efficiency and sustainability in both operations, as well as the implementation of projects and other potentials that can generate carbon credit are also part of this agreement.
