Landslides Hit China's Yunnan Amid Extreme Cold Temperatures, 8 Killed And Dozens Missing

JAKARTA - At least eight people were killed and dozens more missing after landslides hit a village in the mountainous province of Yunnan, China.

Citing Independent.co.uk, Monday, January 22, the landslide occurred amid cold waves and extreme temperatures approaching or below freezing in the province.

The landslide caused 500 other people to flee their homes when the disaster occurred in Liangshui Village, near the city of Tangfang in Zhenxiong Regency, Yunnan, at around 6.00 local time on Monday, January 22.

Chinese state media reported that 47 residents were found buried in 18 houses buried by landslides.

Of the victims, eight bodies were found on Monday, January 22 this afternoon local time.

The cause of the landslide is not yet known for sure, although the documentation from the scene of the incident showed snow material stockpiling the victim's house.

Based on state-owned Chinese Central Television (CCTV) media, Chinese Deputy Prime Minister Zhang Guoqing, who led the government's emergency response operation, deployed 200 heavy rescue vehicles to landslide locations.

A total of 1,000 joint SAR officers were also dispatched to the scene. They are still digging up landslide debris to search for missing victims.
