Malaysia Open 2024: Fajar/Rian Qualify For Quarter Finals

JAKARTA - Men's doubles pair Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto managed to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Malaysia Open 2024.

They got tickets after defeating Fang-Chih Lee/Fang-Jen Lee in two straight games 21-13 and 21-12 at the Axiata Arena, Thursday, January 11, 2024, WIB night.

This is Fajar/Rian's first victory over China's Taipei representative. At the previous two meetings at the Madrid Spain Masters and Hong Kong Open last year, Fajar/Rian always lost.

In the second round, Fajar/Rian will meet the first seed, Liang Wei Yekong/Wang Chang. The Chinese couple escaped after repatriating Keiichiro Matsui/Yoshinori Takeuchi (Japan).

Fajar/Rian are one of the two Indonesian representatives left in this event. Previously, Gregoria Mariska Tunjung had obtained one ticket for the quarter-finals for Indonesia.

The 24-year-old athlete in the quarter-finals tomorrow will meet second seed Chen Yufei. China's singles to the quarter-finals after overthrowing Thailand's singles, Ratchanok Intanon.

Actually, Indonesia has six representatives in the round of 16. However, four other representatives failed to extend their journey at the BWF Super 1000 level event.

The four Indonesian representatives who ran aground were Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, mixed doubles duo Dejan Ferdinansyah/Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja and Rehan Naufal Kusharjanto/Lisa Ayu Kusumawati, and Hendra Setiawan/Mohammad Ahsan.

Hendra/Ahsan themselves failed to reach the quarter-finals due to an injury resignation. Ahsan experienced discomfort in the waist while they were left behind in the second game.
