The Presence Of Cheap Electric Cars To Many Subsidies, France Records Electric Car Sales Record In 2023

JAKARTA - France recorded an excellent annual record of electric vehicle sales in 2023, with 26 percent of new cars being sold, and a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model surging 47 percent from 2022.

Quoting from the Electrek page, Thursday, January 4, various reasons have made the French market grow, one of which is because of the entry of new cars that are cheaper, as well as large government subsidies.

Based on data from local associations, 26 percent of new cars sold in France are electric battery vehicles or PHEV, totaling 1,774,729 new cars.

In addition, when compared to 2022, only 17 percent of new cars sold (electric vehicles) and PHEV accounted for 9 percent of sales. It's no surprise that Tesla is still the market leader of electric vehicles in France and Europe, dominating the sales of Model 3 and Model Y SUVs.

To maintain this momentum, the local government spent 200 million euros, and introduced various interesting programs, namely new social leases, which allow low-income drivers to rent electric cars only by spending 100 euros or around Rp. 1.6 million.

Interestingly, there is no down payment that must be spent on renting an electric car, but for now the program is limited to only 20,000 to 25,000 applications, with plans to expand the program.
