JAKARTA - Cases of default on mutual funds have occurred several times in the domestic financial market. This shows that no investment instrument is free from risk of loss, including mutual funds that have the lowest investment risk.
Usually the occurrence of defaults from mutual funds because the assets that are the basis or underlying products are problematic. For example, there are debt securities or bonds from companies that are underlying from mutual funds that cannot be paid by the issuer company.
Mirae Asset Sekuritas Senior Investment Information Nafan Aji Gusta said that mutual fund investors could oversee the process carried out by bond issuers. Because usually when a company experiences default, it is certain that there will be a process so that investors can consider the company's plan to pay off their bonds.
The publisher company will also hold a general meeting of bond holders. The company will submit plans to pay off bonds. It could be through an extension of payments, installments or changes in terms and other provisions.
Economist & Financial Marker Specialist Lucky Bayu Purnomo explained that if a letter fails to pay the underlying mutual funds, the company that issues bonds must remain responsible to investors.
Lucky said all the source problems came from the issuer or issuer of the debt securities itself, so that when there are cases of default, the issuer must also be held accountable.

Nafan said that to avoid losses, investors can also apply diversification to other instruments. In choosing mutual funds products, Nafan advised investors to study and understand mutual fund documents, both prospectus, product offerings and fund fact sheets.
