Bawaslu Demanded To Be Proactive In Monitoring The Potential Abuse Of State Instruments

JAKARTA The Election Supervisory Body (Bawaslu) is required to be more active in supervising the potential for misuse of state instruments after Gibran Rakabuming Raka runs as a candidate for vice president in the 2024 presidential election.

Executive Director of the Association for Elections and Democracy (Perludem), Khairunnisa Nur Agustyati revealed that Bawaslu should actually start actively monitoring the potential violations before entering the campaign period.

Bawaslu must be more active in supervising this matter, because the potential is not only during the campaign period. But also before the campaign period like today," said Khairunnisa in her statement, Sunday, October 12.

According to him, so far Bawaslu has always argued that election participants have not been determined and have not yet entered the campaign period so that action cannot be taken. In fact, even though the new campaign period will start on November 28, the potential for abuse of authority has already occurred before the official campaign period begins.

Khairunnisa stated that Bawaslu's duties and authorities were regulated in the law, one of which was prevention and prosecution in the event of a violation. It should be with all his authority at this time, Bawaslu is not just waiting during the campaign period. Before the campaign period, it should have also been done to ensure that the election process runs fairly," he added.

He emphasized that the public is certainly waiting and expecting professionalism and independence from Bawaslu. "I think the public has reminded Bawaslu a lot about its current duties and functions, because Bawaslu has transformed into an institution that has great authority," concluded Khairunnisa.
