The Managing Director Of BSI Compares The Performance Of Conventional And Islamic Banks, Here Are Three Facts

JAKARTA - President Director of PT Bank Syariah Indonesia Tbk (BSI) Hery Gunardi is optimistic that the company can grow and develop to be able to compete with conventional banking institutions that have already become big players in this industry.

The projection he revealed was based on the latest performance of Islamic banking in the 2020 period. According to him, Islamic institutions tend to be more able to survive and print positive results compared to conventional ones which are quite depressed.

"Although in terms of the value of Islamic assets it is still less, but the growth trend exceeds conventional with a record of 9.8 percent year-to-date (ytd) until November 2020. Meanwhile, the growth of conventional assets for the same period is 5.4 percent," he said. in the webinar Wednesday, February 20.

Hery added, the most contrasting performance can be seen from the credit or financing segmentation. For conventional credit, it was recorded that credit grew by minus 2.02 percent month-to-month (mtm) as of November 2020. Meanwhile, Sharia managed to achieve positive growth of 9.1 percent.

"On a year-to-date basis, sharia is mighty with a growth of 7.3 percent and a conventional minus 3.6 percent," he said.

As for the collection of third party funds (DPK), both sharia and conventional have achieved positive results. This condition is allegedly due to the tendency of customers to hold back the rate of expansion and use of money during the pandemic.

It was stated that the conventional DPK amounted to IDR 6,275 trillion as of November 2020 or grew by 10.3 percent ytd. Meanwhile, sharia amounted to Rp.474 trillion with a growth of 11.3 percent over the same period.

"By paying attention to this, we are sure that BSI can become a big player in the financial industry in the country and be able to become a motor for product development that is integrated with the national sharia ecosystem," he concluded.
