Kurt Cobain And Dave Grohl's Friendships Are Complicated By Jealousy
JAKARTA - Kurt Cobain "jemburu" to his bandmate in Nirvana, Dave Grohl, according to Nirvana's official biography, Michael Azerbaijan.
Azerrad published a 30-year deluxe edition Come as You Are: The Story of Nirvana, his official biography of Nirvana on October 24.
The updated text, The Applied Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana, is described as "a truly unique book featuring hundreds of extensive new annotations such as essays deepening our understanding of this legendary band and its time of existence."
To publish the book, and talk about the 30-year anniversary of Nirvana's In Utero album, Azerbaijan recently appeared on Rolling Stone's Music Now podcast, alongside writer Brian Hiatt.
One of the topics discussed is the relationship between Cobain and Dave Grohl, with Azerbaijan, in the original book Come As You Are, citing Cobain describing the guitar riff Grohl in the song Scentless Apprentice (In Utero album) as a "bonehead".
"I think it's a bit demeaning, to be honest," I'm Azerbaijan.

Brian Hiatt then mentioned another Cobain quote, where he said about his bandmates, "Dave is the boy who is the easiest to adapt around the world."
"I think Kurt is partially mocking Dave for his fair and normal attitude," said Azerbaijan. "He's a popular guy, can adjust well, that's how it is. And I think Kurt made fun of it because he's not a weird guy, like Kurt. And he's also jealous. I think Kurt is a little jealous of Dave because Dave has been acting together."
The author once shared a story about Cobain talking about Grohl's dismissal in 1993, a story Grohl referred to himself in an interview in 2021 with Vulture, although the story version is slightly different.
"We're on our way to Los Angeles to start production training for the In Utero tour, and I'm sitting in front of Kurt and Krist," recalls Grohl.
I could hear Kurt say, 'I think we need a simpler drummer, like Dan Peters [Mudhoney],' who was someone they almost worked for when I joined the band. I was really upset because I thought a lot of fine things. '
"I spoke to Krist, and I said, 'Is that really what you want to do? Because if that's what you want, maybe tell me, and we can end it.' I ended up talking about this with Kurt, and he said, 'No. That's not what we want to do.' I just felt, 'it's up to you what kind of drummer you want to choose', and they decided I have to stay. "
