Myanmar Military Warns The Elected Parliament To Leave In 24 Hours
JAKARTA - The Myanmar military issued an ultimatum to elected members of parliament to leave the Naypyitaw Government's homestead within 24 hours. Initially, the Myanmar military gave it until February 6.
This ultimatum was issued in line with the number of elected parliamentarians remaining at the government house. These politicians come from various regions in Myanmar, which were previously scheduled to attend the inaugural session of the elected parliament on Monday, February 1.
The military, which rebelled a few hours before the parliamentary trial, had locked up all elected members of parliament in the guesthouse.
U Aung Kyi Nyunt, re-elected National League for Democracy (NLD) Party Upper House member confirmed they were given 24 hours to leave and that army trucks would take them away.
"The members of parliament are ready to leave. I will support the civil disobedience movement. We have a plan", he said, as reported by The Irrawady.
The NLD had previously arranged for lawmakers to stay until February 6, according to a deadline originally planned by the Myanmar military.
As reported previously, the Myanmar military arrested NLD leader and State Advisor Aung San Suu Kyi, President U Win Myint, and other prominent NLD members, government ministers, and political activists on Monday, February 1. These arrests were followed by a takeover of power by the Myanmar military, which has formed an interim government.
