One Ton Of Fish In Lake Maninjau, West Sumatra, Dead Bulk
AGAM - The Department of Fisheries and Food Security in Agam Regency, West Sumatra recorded that around one ton of tilapia fish in Lake Maninjau died in mass. Allegedly the cause is due to weather factors.
"Tilapia ready for harvest has died massively since Tuesday (2/2) morning," said Head of the Agam Fisheries and Food Security Service, Ermanto in Lubukbasung, quoted by Antara, Tuesday, February 2.
According to him, one ton of fish, belonging to residents of Lubuk Kandang, Nagari Bayua, Tanjungraya District, comes from 10 floating cages belonging to several people.
"Each floating marine cage has a death toll of around 100-200 kilograms and we are currently collecting data on the owner of the floating net," he said.
Due to weather conditions, the fish become dizzy and float to the surface of the volcanic lake after oxygen depletes at the bottom of the lake. After that the fish die and the carcasses of the fish float in the floating net cages.
"The total loss of farmers due to the death is around Rp. 20 million and the fish carcasses have been removed from the lake," he said.
Ermanto appealed to fishermen to harvest the fish to be transferred to a pool of fast water in anticipation of significant losses, especially since the potential for fish mortality is still large, while the wind is still strong in the area.
