Borrowing Public Speaking Practitioners' Glasses To See Nia Ramadhani's Awkward Stage

JAKARTA - The duet of Nia Ramadhani with Raffi Ahmad on the TikTok Awards 2021 stage is a conversation. The Twitter timeline was filled with scorn for Nia. Even though it's not entirely Nia Ramadhani's fault either. So MC is not an easy matter. Nia confirmed that. And we explore this perspective through experts.

The TikTok Awards 2021 is the first award ceremony for TikTok creators. The event was broadcast by a private television station owned by MNC: RCTI. The promoter presented a number of celebrities, such as Arnold Poernomo, Boy William, Luna Maya, and Ayu Dewi. All of these names were present as readers of the award nominations.

As the master of ceremony (MC), the promoter presented Nia Ramadhani and Raffi Ahmad. Last name, we all know how the flying hours are. But, Nia Ramadhani?

From a marketing perspective, Nia's presence can be seen as a representation of TikTok's creators. On stage, Nia Ramadhani has repeatedly called herself the creator of TikTok content.

In fact, from this perspective, we can also suspect that the stuttering that Nia Ramadhani displays on stage is a process that has taken into account its 'sense of viral'. Just a game, to put it simply.

But we will not enter that dimension. Nia Ramadhani presents an interesting picture of MC as a profession which seems that no one can do it. Even if it can be learned, the learning process is long. We contacted Vey Adinda, a public speaking practitioner to get a technical point of view on Nia Ramadhani's performance.

Awkward stage

"He is basically not an MC," said Vey in response to the first question VOI asked, Tuesday, February 3.

According to Vey, flying hours are very important in MC-ing activities. And we can see it on the TikTok Awards 2021 stage. Between Nia Ramadhani and Raffi Ahmad.

"Personally, I see that Nia Ramadhani can't put herself in position, 'do I have to punchline or give insertions like that, when and like what. So she hasn't been able to grab the audiences yet."

And said Vey, all these things require hours of flying. However, as expected, a marketing point of view cannot be ruled out in the selection of Nia Ramadhani.

"If I see that Nia Ramadhani is actually being taken as a representative of TikTok artists themselves. Because this program is practically a digital event, not offline. So maybe he (the promoter) wants to grab it from Nia Ramadhani's followers."

"This can be said, like in this era of disruption, we don't really understand which ones are really incapable in their fields or games that are made so that this event has a sense of viral. From technical reasons alone, it lacks preparation, conversation, chemistry."

Another technical possibility is a monitor error. This kind of interference with devices, said Vey, can also affect the appearance of an MC on stage. For those who are experienced it may be handled. But for Nia Ramadhani?

"Many things, starting from mentality and technicality. I see that the preparation is very minimal ... I don't know if the creator of this event has thought carefully. Why did Nia Ramadhani get there? Has it been thought carefully too. Because of the reputation of the promoter. When it failed, when it didn't work, that's a big record. "

Even so, this wasn't new either. When viewed from the discipline of public speaking, Nia Ramadhani is not plotted as a main actor who occupies the position of master of ceremonies, but as an atractor.

Organizers preparation?

Vey questioned the readiness of the event organizers. If we look at what happened to Nia Ramadhani and Raffi Ahmad, we can guess that the event organizers were not sufficiently prepared for the event to take place.

Ideally, in an event on a scale like the TikTok Awards 2021, there are at least two most standard protocols that need to be followed: technical meetings and general rehearsals (GR). Technical meetings are important for synchronizing aspects of the event, including rundowns and building chemistry between performers, especially the MC if he is not single.

"After the technical meeting, they will build chemistry, they will know in general terms. An event like this, like what. Determining the outfit too," said Vey.

Then, GR is so important to anticipate and minimize errors. GR is a simulation of the progress of the event.

"Supposedly, from the guests who came, whatever sponsorship has been simulated. That is, if something like this happens I'm not sure there is a GR or not."

Not just anyone

And about the MC profession that is not arbitrary, Vey explained. Vey said, public speaking is a unique activity. A person's performance is determined by his flying hours. Public speaking itself is generally divided into so many branches of concentration.

There are MCs, moderators, to private training, such as public speaking training for a company leader, for example. These things are learned in a long sequence.

MC problem, for example. Said Vey, "Flying hours are important because for example we know there are MCs that are protocol, there are MCs that are informal. It's difficult between these two. It's not 'in'. It's not as easy as imagining to move from one characteristic of the stage to another."

Regarding protocol, learning public speaking also equips a person with certain standards. "There is training. There is a sequence. For example, what should be said first to get the audience's attention."

"The two greet, the third pray first, fourth we greet the guest of honor, starting from who this is. What order. From the highest to the lowest and the titles include and the beloved audience. So the order is there."

And the public speaking class, according to Vey, is also not a simple matter. Regarding costs, Vey gave a price range for studying in a public speaking class. The price is relative, indeed. It depends on the mentor's flying hours.

The reason is that mentors with high flying hours usually have the most practical tips or secrets that can be practiced by learning participants. "For those with high flight hours, those who were scorned and others, they are more trained."

"They also usually give a recipe, 'I can continue to use it because I'm like this, you know.' That's relative, yes. Yes, as far as I know, no school is cheap. It can start from IDR 1 million to a dozen million. Apart from mentors, it also depends on the course they take. "

Flying hours and mentality are the keywords. According to Vey, even the very first and fundamental training of public speaking is mental strengthening. Usually, in public speaking training, the first provision is to instill a complete perspective on what public speaking is.

"I'm a public speaking school, which means I know what to do. You have to know what the meaning of public speaking itself is. Well, you, the first thing to be taught is you know first. After that, we take out the rules of public speaking itself. So there are images. Forming a theater of mind in their (participants) heads. "

So about what exactly is public speaking, Vey answered, "Mental already. First and foremost."
