Minister Of Communication And Information Budi Supports Police Steps To Investigate Illegal IMEI Cases
Responding to the case of illegal International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) against hundreds of cellphones in Indonesia, the Ministry of Communication and Information supports the police.
"Currently, the Indonesian National Police have taken legal steps regarding violations that occurred in the registration of IMEI registration, the Ministry of Communication and Information supports the steps taken by the legal apparatus in order to regulate IMEI registration in Indonesia according to the distribution of existing main tasks and functions (tupoksi)," said Kominfo Minister Budi Arie Setiadi in a statement when confirmed by VOI through the Director General of IKP Usman Kansong.
Previously, Bareskrim Polri said it would turn off or shut down hundreds of thousands of cellphones recorded using illegal IMEIs.
In this case, there were 191,000 cellphones whose IMEI registration process was unofficial. Of these, iPhones are phones with IMEIs that are not registered at most among others.
As one of the government agencies that manages the list of industrial goods entering Indonesia, the Ministry of Industry has also appealed to the public to be careful when buying manufactured goods, especially in purchasing cellphones.
Because the IMEI arrangement requires the support of cellular operators, the Ministry of Industry asks for assistance from Kominfo as a telecommunications regulator to regulate the IMEI problem in Indonesia.

For information, IMEI registration itself has been implemented in Indonesia since September 2020. This aims to protect the production of domestic HKT devices from illegal entry of foreign HKT devices that cause significant price disparities so that domestic HKT loses to compete in the market.
As of last July 31, Bareskrim Polri still has not said when the shutdown will be carried out. Director of Cyber Crime at the National Police Criminal Investigation Agency Brigadier General Adi Vivid said his party was still in the scheduling process.
