As Predicted, Erik Ten Hag Chooses Bruno Fernandes As Manchester United Captain To Replace Harry Maguire
JAKARTA - This season Manchester United (MU) officially appears under the leadership of the new captain. The position of captain previously occupied by Harry Maguire is now filled by Bruno Fernandes.
The news that Bruno Fernandes, who served as captain of the Red Devils, was shared directly by the team through an official statement on Thursday, July 20.
Through this announcement, MU reported that manager Erik Ten Hag appointed Fernandes as permanent captain after serving as substitute captain in the previous season.
"Bruno Fernandes has been appointed the new Manchester United captain," read the club's official statement.
"The Portuguese ban has worn the United captain's armband on numerous occasions and Erik ten Hag has confirmed that he will now lead the team permanently," the statement continued.
Throughout last season Fernandes was often appointed as a leader on the field, because their main captain Maguire was often reserved. Fernandes' appointment as a replacement was not without reason, because this 28-year-old player has also served as MU's deputy captain since 2021.
Maguire previously revealed that he had been removed from the captain's position after talking directly with Ten Hag. Maguire admitted that he was disappointed with the coach's decision made at the meeting which took place on Sunday, July 16.
"After discussing with the manager today, he (Erik Ten Hag) told me that he replaced the captain," Maguire said on his personal social media account.
"He described his reasons to me and while I personally was very disappointed. But, I will continue to give everything every time I wear this uniform," he concluded.
