Prabowo Ensures Indonesia Fulfills Commitment To South Korea Regarding KFX/IFX Fighter Jet Project

JAKARTA - Minister of Defense (Menhan) Prabowo Subianto said the Indonesian government would fulfill all commitments to South Korea (South Korea) related to the KFX/IFX fighter aircraft project.

"Yes, we will continue to negotiate with them. Anyway, we will fulfill our commitments," Prabowo said after being received by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) at the State Palace, Jakarta, Monday, June 26 afternoon.

Prabowo said the government is currently negotiating with South Korea.

When asked about the time to fulfill the KFX/IFX project commitment, Prabowo was reluctant to specify. However, Prabowo guarantees that he will fulfill all commitments to South Korea.

"We are basically fulfilling our commitment to them," he said, confiscated by Antara.

The Indonesian government took part in the project to develop KFX/IFX fighter aircraft with South Korea. The fighter jet was named KF-21 Boramae.

Indonesia is reportedly still having a financing obligation for the KFX/IFX project.

The total investment for KF-21 Boramae is worth 8.8 trillion won, or around Rp. 100 trillion with a 60 percent financing scheme from the South Korean government, 20 percent from Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) - a defense company from South Korea - and 20 percent from the Indonesian government.

The development of the KF-21 Boramae is currently in the engineering and manufacturing development (EDM) stage, which is expected to last until 2026. After that, the fighter jets will enter the mass production stage.

Indonesia plans to buy 48 KF-21 Boramae units in the joint program, while South Korea buys 120 units.
