Smart Chips is a snippet that you can paste in Google Docs and Google Sheets that is extended to show more information. When you select or simply direct the cursor to Smart Chip, you can get additional details and take action.

There are several types of Smart Chips that can be selected depending on the details you want to include:

People: Show your name, email address, and action to email in Gmail, message, video call, schedule events, and add or edit contacts. You can also open a detailed view in Google Contact in the new browser tab.

Files: Show a small preview with the option to open bigger ones (when applicable), link to files in the appropriate Google app or Google Drive, file owners, and options to share files.

Events: Featuring event details from Google Calendar including titles, dates, and times with links to meetings, buttons for copying links to events, and options for attaching current documents to events. You can also press the Tab button to insert meeting records for the event.

Places: Show a small Google Maps preview with the option to open a larger one, location and address type, and the option to copy the link to the location in Maps or get directional instructions. Places Smart Chip is currently only available on Google Documents.

Date: Show a date with the option to select the date format and order a meeting. Enter a word like today or tomorrow, or a complete date with the moon, date, and year. Use the gear icon to select the date format you want to use.

Dates Smart Chip is a bonus. Currently it only works in Google Docs and uses the symbol @ rather than the menu.

As mentioned, you can select a Smart Chip or simply point the cursor at it to see the details. With certain types of chips, you can take additional action. This can be useful not only for your readers, but also for yourself.

For example, you can select the People's chip and use the event Schedule button to prepare meetings with contacts in the Google Calendar. The calendar will open in the new browser tab.

For another example, you can select the Places chip and use the View direction button. This opens Google Maps in the video where you are ready to enter the starting point and get directions.

For files, you can insert chips for documents, workbooks, images, or PDFs. Then, take a look at the item preview in Smart Chip. It's convenient to confirm that you have the right file or just view the snippet. Some files may also provide a larger preview.
