PALEMBANG - South Sumatra Police (Sumsel) named a woman with the initials SM (20) as a suspect in a case of alleged criminal act of trafficking in persons (TPPO). Head of Sub-Directorate V PPA of the General Criminal Investigation Directorate of the South Sumatra Police AKBP Raswidiati Anggraini, said the suspect SM, a resident of Seberang Ulu II, Palembang City was named a suspect by police investigators after obtaining sufficient evidence and witnesses. Some of these evidences include cash worth Rp. 1.8 million and one unit of his cellphone. According to Raswidiati, the suspect got millions of rupiah in cash as wages for the distribution of a girl to become a date friend. He said the victim who was being sold by the suspect SM was still 16 years old, and each time the date was valued at Rp. 1.8 million by a masher. "The suspect persuaded the victim who was still underage, so he was involved in this illicit activity. Then, the victim's photos were promoted by the suspect using Instagram social media and the short message network MiChat," he said as quoted by ANTARA, Monday, June 19. The activity was carried out by the suspect in the last few months and the female child who became the victim was known to be more than one person.

To investigators, he said, the suspect who was arrested on Friday (16/6) admitted that from the money he received a profit of Rp. 1.1 million, while the rest was given to each victim. Currently, the suspect is being held in the detention room of the South Sumatra Police for the purposes of the investigation process before the case file is transferred to the prosecutor's office.
The suspect was charged with violating Article 12 of Law Number 21 of 2007 concerning the eradication of criminal acts of trafficking in persons (TPPO), in conjunction with Article 88 of Law Number 35 of 2014 concerning child protection with a threat of imprisonment of more than five years.
