Liverpool Records A Bad Record Of 100 Years Of Never Winning At Old Trafford In The FA Cup
JAKARTA - Liverpool lost again. This time with a score of 2-3, from Manchester United in the FA Cup round four, Sunday, January 24 evening. Jurgen Klopp's men had to leave Old Trafford overshadowed by a bad record of 100 years of never winning there in this event.
From the start, the match at Old Trafford has looked more interesting than the two teams meeting in the Premier League match at Anfield a week ago.
In the 18th minute, Mohamed Salah puts Liverpool ahead with a flick over the head of keeper Dean Henderson to complete Roberto Firmino's through ball.
However, the advantage did not last long because eight minutes later Mason Greenwood scored to equalize for United.
Starting from a clinical counter-attack, Marcus Rashford sent a charming cross into the perforated Liverpool defense and the ball was too high for James Milner to head and fell before Greenwood who finished with a fine shot into the far post area.
The score lasted until halftime and the fragility of Liverpool's back line again had to be paid handsomely three minutes into the second half when Rashford led United to lead 2-1.
The goal could not be separated from a blunder by young defender Rhys Williams, when he failed to clear the ball and gave Rashford the chance to stab into the box before finishing with a shot that Alisson was unable to stop.
Liverpool struggled to retaliate but the narrow chances of a Roberto Firmino header were not completed by James Milner who shot past keeper Dean Henderson in the 58th minute.
However, the result of the goal kick from that opportunity led to blunders for MU players who failed to build an attack from behind and the ball was grabbed by Milner on the edge of the penalty box.
Milner passed it on to Firmino, who immediately fired a pull-back pass and the aging midfielder let the ball roll past him to be struck by Salah to equalize 2-2.
The goal fired the Liverpool players enthusiastically and Salah had a chance to grab a hat-trick in the 67th minute but his shot was too weak and was easily tamed by Henderson.
The wasted opportunity proved crucial recently, as Liverpool's back line made another mistake when Fabinho violated Edinson Cavani's fall right on the line of the penalty box.
The results of the free kick obtained by MU were faced and executed perfectly by Bruno Fernandes to bring the Red Devils back to the 3-2 lead.
Fernandes, who only came on in the 66th minute, scored with a careful free-kick and shot past goalkeeper Alisson Becker at the far post in the 76th minute.
The goal paved the way for MU to the fifth round of the FA Cup against West Ham United, who yesterday had already passed past the third-tier team Doncaster Rovers, according to the official FA page note quoted by Antara.
