BMKG Records 6.4 Magnitude Earthquake In Banda Sea, No Tsunami Potential
JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded two follow-up activities from an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 in the Banda Sea.
Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center Daryono in a written statement received in Jakarta, Saturday, said that the earthquake began with a preliminary earthquake with a magnitude of M 4.8.
"As of 16.30 WIB, the results of BMKG monitoring showed that there were two aftershocks with the largest magnitude M 5.5," Daryono said as reported by Antara.
The results of the BMKG analysis show that this earthquake has updated parameters with a magnitude of M6.4. The epicenter of the earthquake is located at coordinates 5.28 deg LS; 125.64 deg BT, or precisely located at sea at a distance of 227 km northeast of Wakatobi, Southeast Sulawesi at a depth of 32 km.
Daryono said that from paying attention to the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was a type of shallow earthquake due to active fault activity in the Banda Sea.
"The results of the analysis of the source mechanism show that the earthquake has a sliding mechanism (strike-slip)," he said.
Based on the estimation of the shock map (shakemap), this earthquake caused shocks in the Wakatobi area with an intensity scale of III - IV MMI (if during the day it was felt by many people in the house) and the South Buru area with an intensity scale of III MMI (The movement felt real in the house. Feels the vibration as if the truck is passing).
So far, there have been no reports of damage caused by the earthquake. The modeling results show that this earthquake has no potential for a tsunami.
