Pope Francis Conveys Condolences And Prayers For Disaster Victims In Indonesia

JAKARTA - Pope Francis expressed his condolences and prayed for the victims of the earthquake in West Sulawesi, as well as the Sriwijaya Air SJ-182 airplane crash.

"Sincere solidarity with all those affected by this natural disaster and pray for the calm of the deceased, the healing of the wounded and the comfort of all who are grieving," Pope Francis said in a telegram sent on his behalf by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin citing vaticannews.

Then, through the Apostolic Ambassador to Indonesia and local authorities, Pope Francis wishes to extend a prayer of support to all those involved in the ongoing search and rescue efforts.

This prayer was delivered by the Pope from the Apostolic Palace Library. Usually, the Pope delivers a prayer or speech in a window in one corner of St. Peter's Basilica, overlooking St. Peter's Square.

It is known, a number of disasters have occurred in Indonesia in the last two weeks. The Sriwijaya Air SJ-182 plane crashed in the waters of the Thousand Islands on January 9, killing 62 crew and passengers.

On the same day, a landslide occurred in Sumedang, West Java. Next, on Friday January 15 there was an earthquake in West Sulawesi which killed dozens of people and injured hundreds of others. Meanwhile in Manado, floods and landslides that occurred on Saturday, January 16, caused 5 people to die and hundreds of others were displaced.
