5 Hours Betting Life And Death, 70 Doctors Successfully Separate Conjoined Twins From Conjoined Chest At RSUDAM

BANDAR LAMPUNG - The Abdul Moeloek Regional General Hospital (RSUDAM) stated that the first conjoined twin operation in Lampung was successfully carried out.

"Yesterday the operation on conjoined twins was carried out. Exactly at 07.00 WIB, the two conjoined twins entered the operating room and the operation was carried out at 11.00 WIB. This operation was carried out by a team of doctors at the RSUDAM assisted by the team from Doctor Soetomo Hospital," said the Head of the Surgical Team Conjoined twins at Hospital, Billy Rosan, in Bandar Lampung, as reported by Antara, Thursday, March 16.

In the implementation of conjoined twins surgery against the front chest or xiphos-omphalopagus, what is quite difficult to do is to carry out the separation of the liver because it is prone to bleeding.

"The operation went smoothly and the two babies were successfully separated. What is quite difficult and risky in carrying out the operation is when separating the hearts, whose positions are united. Because there are many blood vessels and there is a risk of bleeding and this is related to other organs," he said.

According to him, the implementation of the separation operation took less time than expected, namely only 4.5-5 hours, from an estimated 12 hours of operation.

"So the separation of the liver takes 2 hours, the separation of the lower sternum 1 hour, and the closure of the chest wall and stomach is carried out in a separate operating room takes 2 hours. So the total operation time can be faster, only 4.5-5 hours," he said.

He explained that the current condition of the two pediatric patients who underwent surgery to separate conjoined twins was in stable condition, and was still under intensive supervision from a team of doctors.

"Right now the most important thing is to keep the patient's condition stable. Yesterday the baby was immediately put into the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) room to monitor the patient's condition," he said again.

The Head of Integrated Anesthesia and Intensive Installation and Pain Management at RSUDAM dr Imam Ghozali, SpAn. MKes, KMN, said a similar response.

"The child's condition is stable, he has moved earlier, and 48 hours is a crucial time. This will be monitored continuously for 24 hours. This success is a special gift for the 59th Anniversary of the Lampung Provincial Government," said Dr. Imam Ghozali, SpAn. MKes, KMN.

He said that apart from carrying out intensive monitoring, a postoperative care process and psychological assistance would also be carried out.

"We have separated the breathing apparatus and several devices in stages, and we are also taking care of them psychologically. Because they were originally one and are now separated, so we are taking care of this too. Hopefully, the two child patients can continue to be healthy and grow," he added.

It was learned that last Wednesday the RSUDAM had carried out the first operation to separate conjoined twins in its area from North Lampung Regency.

The operation for the child involved 70 doctors from RSUDAM and Dr. Soetomo Regional General Hospital.
