Prone To Crime, City Government Asked To Install CCTV In Ambon's Mardika Market

AMBON - The Regional People's Representative Council (DPRD) of Ambon City, Maluku, asked the Ambon City Government (Pemkot) to immediately install Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) or surveillance cameras in all corners of the Ambon Mardika Market to detect criminal acts.

This is because the Ambon Mardika Market is now rife with crimes including pickpocketing and mugging.

"If you can install CCTV, because at Mardika Market now there is a lot of what's called pickpocketing," said Commission I Chairperson of the Ambon City DPRD, Jafry Taihuttu, reported by ANTARA, Sunday, February 19.

According to him, the existence of CCTV will be very useful to be able to detect criminal acts from gangs of criminals there (Mardika Market).

In addition, it will make it easier to find out the mastermind behind the pickpocketing at Mardika Market by the police.

“If this tool is available, I think the movements of this gang of thieves can be identified. It can also help the police uncover who is the perpetrator and mastermind behind the pickpocketing at Ambon's Mardika Market," he said.

He also asked traders and residents of Ambon City to be more vigilant when they are in the center of a crowd. Because pickpockets will act if there is an opportunity that allows them.

"We DPRD remind residents to be careful of pickpocketing. Important luggage must be ensured safe when walking in crowds," he said.

Jafry appealed to residents not to use flashy valuables when traveling to markets or other crowded centers.

"Valuable items that are conspicuous, such as gold bracelets, rings, earrings, and others, are what invite pickpockets to carry out their actions. So appearance must also be considered," said Jafry.

Currently, the Maluku Regional Police (Polda) has set up an integrated security post at Mardika Market to improve security and public order.

Meanwhile, the two perpetrators of the theft at Mardika Market have been secured by the General Criminal Investigation Directorate (Dirreskrimum) of the Maluku Police.
