The award is presented at the Special Merit Awards ceremony, which returns for the first time since 2020 during Grammy Week.
The Lifetime Achievement Award is awarded by vote of the Recording Academy's national trustees to musicians who, during their lifetime made a creative contribution of outstanding artistic significance to the recording field.

"I do fan mail — old fashioned fan mail — and I get mail from all over the world, like [from] Nirvana fans. Like, just all over the world. A lot of young people. There's a new generation of Nirvana fans and I'm so thankful for that," continued the bassist.
Formed in 1987 by Cobain and Novoselic, Nirvana emerged from the Pacific Northwest onto the global stage with the release of its debut album, Bleach in 1989.
Two years later, their second album, Nevermind sparked a seismic shift in global youth culture. Rising to No. 1 worldwide and featuring the Grammy Hall Of Fame single Smells Like Teen Spirit, Nevermind's impact transformed Cobain, Novoselic, and Dave Grohl into one of the most successful and influential musical entities of all time.
Nirvana's third and final studio album, In Utero, released in 1993, completed an indelible streak that returned the integrity and spirit of rock 'n' roll to the top of the charts.
With induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2014 and more than 75 million records sold, Nirvana continues to be the sole inspiration for generations of fans and musicians around the world.
