Before Shin Tae-yong, 3 Great Coachs With This Mentereng Achievement Also Failed To Bring The Indonesian National Team To Win The AFF Cup
JAKARTA - Shin Tae-yong's career continuation with the Indonesian national team has begun to be questioned. His performance was sanctioned after failing to bring the Garuda Squad to the 2022 AFF Cup.
There was pressure for the South Korean coach to resign from his position because he was deemed incompetent to develop a team. But in reality, the failure experienced by the national team was not only due to the coach factor.
Because before Shin Tae-yong, there were several names of foreign coaches who had world-class achievements who were also unable to bring the Garuda Squad to fly high on the Southeast Asian stage.
As is known, the Garuda Squad has qualified for the AFF Cup final six times from 14 editions that have been held, including 2022. But unfortunately none of that opportunity could be used to become a championship title.
Here are some foreign coaches who have world-class flashy achievements but are unable to bring the Indonesian national team to win the title, as directed from various sources:
1. Peter White (England)
The first foreign coach to fail to bring the Indonesian national team through to the final was Peter White. The British tactician was contracted by the Indonesian national team from 2004-2007.
During his tenure, White led the national team in two editions of the AFF Cup. However, in the second edition in 2007 his Garuda Squad even died first in the preliminary round of group B which are members of Vietnam, Singapore and Laos. This record decreased after previously being able to bring the Garuda Squad to run for the 2004 AFF Cup.
Even though Peter White himself had a good record before dealing with Indonesia. He is noted to have been a coach for the Thailand national team and during his tenure, White twice brought Thailand to win the AFF Cup in the 2000 and 2002 editions.
2. Alfred Reidl (Austria)
The figure of Alfred Reidl became a familiar coach in the ears of the Indonesian people. The Austrian coach had shined because he managed to bring the brilliant Indonesian national team in the 2010 AFF Cup even though it was only limited to the runner-up title.
But bad records for men who are now dead actually occurred in the next edition. Reidl failed to bring Indonesia far into the 2014 AFF Cup because it died first in the group phase, in the 2016 edition Reidl tried to improve records even though the results were still limited to runners up.
Behind Reidl's stagnation in leading the national team, he actually has a pretty good record. This Austrian coach could bring Vietnam to be the only co-host to the quarter-finals of the 2007 Asian Cup.
3. Luis Milla (Spain)
The Spaniard who is now handling Persib Bandung does have quite a beautiful memory with supporters of the Indonesian national team, even though no significant achievements have been achieved.
The only achievement that Luis Milla could offer was to bring the Garuda Muda squad to win the 2017 SEA Games silver medal. However, when they entered the stock exchange, the candidate for coach of the Indonesian national team in 2019 Milla did not dare to win the title for the Indonesian national team.
It was this thing that Shin Tae-yong agreed to. Milla has never escorted the national team to appear in the AFF Cup, but behind his achievements with the national team which was not optimal, Milla had won UEFA U-21 with the Spanish national team.
4. Shin Tae-yong (South Korea)
Shin Tae-yong is the latest foreign coach to fail to bring Indonesia through to the 2022 AFF Cup final. Even though in the 2020 edition, the South Korean coach has brought a number of rapid changes to the Garuda Squad even though he returned only to the runner-up title.
The performance of the Garuda Squad in the 2022 AFF Cup has decreased drastically. The players even struggled to finish. The performance was directly proportional to the results. The Red and White team died in the 2022 AFF Cup semifinals after being beaten 0-2 in an aggregate match against Vietnam.
Whereas before agreeing to handle the Indonesian national team in early 2019, Shin Tae-yong came with qualified confident capital. He was noted to have brought South Korea to win the 2017 EAFF after slaughtering Japan 4-1 and bringing South Korea to a 2-0 win over Germany at the 2018 World Cup.
