Following In Apple's Footsteps, Microsoft Makes Its Own ARM-based Processor

JAKARTA - Tech giant Microsoft is likely to follow in Apple's footsteps. Reportedly the company is developing an ARM-based processor or CPU for its cloud services and maybe even its Surface device.

Summarizing a Bloomberg report quoted from Ars Technica, Saturday, December 19, some processors might be used for Microsoft's Azure cloud service, and explore other possibilities for its mobile Surface PC line.

Today, Microsoft has used Intel-based processors on Azure and its various product lines, although the company is still partnering with AMD and Qualcomm on the Surface Laptop 3 and Surface Pro X chips.

It is known, AMD is also working with Microsoft specifically for Ryzen processors. So, it's no surprise to know that Redmond will explore more uses for the ARM chip.

But it looks like Microsoft will compete with Apple. Given, Apple is also slowly moving from Intel chips to ARM.

Not long ago, the Cupertino-based company launched an ARM-based Apple Silicon M1 for its newest Mac. Some have argued that the M1 processor feels like the beginning of something new and impressive. That means, ARM-based processors in the future will be increasingly interested in large industries.

However, Microsoft did not respond more to the project it was working on, saying it was investing in "its own capabilities" while also fostering and strengthening partnerships.
