BMKG Issues Early Warning, Until June 28 High Wave 2-3.5 Meters Potentially Occurs In NTT Waters

KUPANG - The Tenau-Kupang Maritime Meteorology Station, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an early warning of a 3.5-meter wave that could hit sea waters in East Nusa Tenggara for the next three days until June 28.

"The potential for high waves ranging from 2.5 to 3.5 meters needs to be watched out for because it poses a high risk to ferry shipping," said Head of the BMKG Tenau-Kupang Maritime Meteorological Station Syaeful Hadi in Kupang, Antara, Sunday, June 26.

A number of water points that are likely to be hit by high waves are the Sumba Strait to the west, the southern Sawu Sea, the Indian Ocean to the south of Sumba-Sabu and south of Kupang-Rote and the southern waters of Kupang-Rote.

The potential for high waves, he said, needs to be watched out for by ship operators, especially ferries, because they can endanger shipping safety.

In addition, a number of other water points are also likely to be hit by waves of 1.25-2.5 meters, namely the eastern part of the Sumba Strait, the northern part of the Sawu Sea, the Alor-Pantar Strait and the northern waters of Kupang-Rote.

"The potential for this wave also needs to be watched out for because it poses a high risk to the shipping of barges and fishing boats," he said.

Furthermore, Syaeful Hadi explained that while the synoptic conditions showed that the wind pattern in the southern part of Indonesia was dominantly moving from East to Southeast with speeds ranging from 10-25 knots.

He appealed to ship operators and fishermen to continue to monitor the weather conditions of the waters conveyed by the BMKG so that they can be used as references for shipping activities.
