Kominfo Calls PDP Bill Discussion Starting To Find A Bright Spot

JAKARTA - Special Staff of the Minister of Communication and Information (Kominfo) for Political Communication JH Philip Gobang said that discussions on the Personal Data Protection Bill (RUU PDP) together with Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives had begun to find a bright spot.

"From the various communications made between the Ministry of Communications and Informatics and the House of Representatives, a consensus has now begun, and an agreement is already in place. It remains only to be discussed further in the DPR," said Philip when interviewed about the progress of the PDP Bill in Jakarta, Friday, June 11 evening.

This gives hope to the public that the bill that was prepared to provide more protection for the privacy and data of the public is getting closer.

According to him, there is a possibility that with an understanding between the DPR RI and the Ministry of Communication and Informatics, the PDP Bill will soon be realized.

However, this should be discussed further in a forum held by legislators.

"This DPR is indeed the place to ensure that the discussion on the PDP Bill is completed and can be passed into law. We hope that it can be completed in the not too distant future," he said, quoted by Antara.

The discussion of the PDP Bill continues to experience tug-of-war regarding the party that will be responsible for its enforcement practice.

The House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia wants the issue of personal data protection to be specifically monitored by an independent institution so that law enforcement can run in a neutral and fair manner.

Meanwhile, the Government through the Ministry of Communication and Informatics hopes that in the future the supervision of personal data protection can be directly under the supervision of the ministry to be more efficient.

However, the discussion now seems to have found a bright spot and may, as expected, be completed before the end of Indonesia's G20 Presidency.

The PDP Bill has been discussed at length and submitted since 2016, and has even been included in the Prolegnas (National Legislation Program) list several times.

With the latest agreement in 2022 between the Indonesian House of Representatives and the Ministry of Communication and Informatics, now people can expect this bill to become a legal regulation in the near future.
