JAKARTA — Swimming athlete Flairene Candrea Wonomiharjo managed to make a surprise at the 2021 SEA Games. She successfully won a gold medal in the swimming sport.
Flairene was unseeded in the women's 100 meters backstroke when she competed at My Dinh Water Sports Palace, on Tuesday, 17 May. Despite the status of a dark horse, he succeeded in proving himself occupying the highest podium.
The 17-year-old athlete finished ahead with a time of 1 minute 3.36 seconds. She was followed by two Filipino representatives, Chloe Kennedy Anne Isleta Doromal (1 minute 3.860 seconds) who won silver and Jessica Joy Gerianne Taguba (1 minute 3.780 seconds) who got bronze.
"This medal is for Indonesia, my beloved country. I am very happy to be able to win gold. Because, I also just entered the 2022 national training. Last year I focused on beautiful swimming," said Flairene after the race.
Indonesia actually pinned its hopes of a gold medal on Masniari Wolf in the number that Flairene won.
Masniari, who is an Indonesian-German swimmer, previously won the 50-meter backstroke. However, when competing in the 100 meters, Masniari had to settle for fourth place with a time of 1 minute 4.510 seconds.
