Interested In Hiring Terence Crawford, Floyd Mayweather: I Will Support Black Americans First
JAKARTA - Boxing legend Floyd Mayweather has expressed interest in signing free agent Terence Crawford after the 34-year-old boxer's contract with Top Rank expired last year.
Crawford, suing his old company for breach of contract and racial bias, is eyeing a match with Errol Spence Jr for an undisputed welterweight championship duel. And apparently, Mayweather wants to be involved in that fight.
To Ben Thompson of Fight Hype, Mayweather spoke about his desire to support his fellow black American boxers.
"It's no different than the Chinese supporting the Chinese, the Dominicans supporting the Dominicans, the Puerto Ricans supporting the Puerto Ricans, the Mexicans supporting the Mexicans," Mayweather said.
"I am black American. I will support black Americans first. I always want the best for Terence Crawford...always.

"We spoke on many occasions. We each have our own phone numbers. Hopefully, everything goes as it should, and of course, I want to sign Terence Crawford. I'm talking about getting Terence Crawford the fight he wants.
“You see so many young fighters now starting their own promotion companies. You need to be able to give the fighter (1 million and up to 6 million US dollars) upfront before you get a promotional company. I'm not talking about Terence Crawford, but boxers in general.
“If you can't do that, and become the main promoter now, then we have to wait for that. That's what I thought. Everything has a time and place. But I think every fighter should have a dream of being a promoter. Promoting is rough work.
"You can look at me for example. I wanted to be a promoter to help the fighters, but the more I help them, the more they hate me. It happens because of territory. It happens in sport. This is what happens.
"I wanted to put the fighters in a position to get the biggest share. Before Floyd Mayweather became a promoter in the sport, promoters got the biggest share and earned more money than the fighters... I turned fighters into crazy money."
