Swearing And Curses Effectively Reduce Pain In The Body
JAKARTA - From a long time ago, we were taught not to speak harshly to anyone. Especially if you swear or grumble about something that is not fun.
But who would have thought, swearing and swearing would have a positive effect. One of them is able to reduce pain in the body.
As strange as it may sound, because many people say swearing only adds emotion and doesn't help solve problems at all. But a psychologist Dr Richard Stephens proves, if swearing can tolerate pain in the body.
"Swearing triggers analgesia caused by stress. It's part of the adrenaline response when released, the heart pumps blood faster and we become more able to cope with the aggressor quickly. Swearing helps many people better tolerate pain," said Richard quoted from Wired.
His research was carried out on 67 students at Keele University in Staffordshire, England. Stephens asked his students to place their hands in the ice water for a few minutes. These students were also allowed to swear several times.
From the study, the average student who swore could tolerate pain for almost two minutes. They also described swearing or swearing words during the test. Most of them wrote "arrgh, no, f * ck, bugger, and shit."
Richard added, the pain-reducing effect would be reduced if someone cursed repeatedly. It can be felt from changes in behavior such as speaking harshly with emotional signs in expressing such as stress, fear, anxiety or joy.
Many researchers also think that swearing can build trust and increase productivity. They believe that they think it is better to vent their emotions through swear words than using physical violence.
