BRIN And BMKG Develop Red And White Tsunami Model

JAKARTA - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) have developed a Red and White tsunami modeling system to strengthen the Indonesian Tsunami Early Warning System (InaTEWS).

"We are developing and building human resources and the Red and White tsunami modeling infrastructure that can be implemented in the tsunami early warning system in Indonesia," said Acting Head of the BRIN Hydrodynamic Technology Research Center, Widjo Kongko, quoted by Antara, Tuesday, March 8.

Widjo said the collaboration between BRIN and BMKG was carried out within the framework of the Tsunami Working Group Consortium, and was planned to be implemented in 2-3 years starting from 2022 to 2023 or 2024.

The Tsunami Working Group has the task of planning policies in the field of tsunamis and supporting activities in a sustainable manner, both in the form of short and medium term programs, as well as providing input on policy strategies for tsunami observation, tsunami data processing and analysis, modeling, dissemination and tsunami services, as well as emerging tsunami technology. .

To design the tsunami modeling, Widjo said it was necessary to harmonize regulations from each ministry/institution (K/L) or consortium involved, and needed support from human resources (HR) and budget.

Meanwhile, Head of BMKG Dwikorita Karnawati said that her party is ready to work together to realize the sustainability of modeling technology and tsunami mitigation in Indonesia, as well as to regenerate InaTEWS which was initiated in 2008.

He hopes that InaTEWS with the Merah Putih modeling can be realized within 1-2 years.
