Celebrate International Women's Day, Barbie Launches Shonda Rhimes Version Of Dolls

JAKARTA - Legendary television producer and screenwriter Shonda Rhimes has her own replica of a Barbie doll.

As part of this year's celebration of Barbie International Women's Day, the brand honors 12 role models from around the world with unique dolls that look just like them including Rhimes.

"I have my own Barbie! Proud to be among 12 amazing women, all of whom have broken barriers in their respective careers," said Rhimes.

The doll is wearing the same outfit from the November 2021 cover of Variety magazine, with a rainbow skirt and blue sweater decorated with hearts.

The founder of the Shondaland production house also commented on the importance of small children having role models and dolls that are similar to them.

"The idea that there are dolls out there that can look like you and give you the ability to imagine yourself in a different world, in a different way, in a way that you may only secretly dream of, or that you think is impossible in real life. real life, I think that's very important," Rhimes said.

These 12 model dolls represent women from various industries, including entertainment, education and more.

This latest idea follows the launch of Barbie's 2018 "Dream Gap Project" campaign, which stems from Mattel-funded New York University research, which found that young girls are less likely to raise their hands for leadership positions.

However, after they played with female role model dolls, both girls and boys were more likely to volunteer to lead group activities.

"We know that children are inspired by what they see around them, which is why it is so important for young girls to see themselves reflected in the role models who have bravely crossed obstacles and overcome the Dream Gap to become the brave women they are today. this," said Lisa McKnight, senior vice president and head of global Barbie and Dolls at Mattel.

"On this International Women's Day, we are proud to honor 12 global pioneering women to help empower the next generation of female leaders by sharing their stories."

Besides Rhimes, Barbie's 12 role models include Ari Horie, Pat McGrath, Melissa Sariffodeen, Adriana Azuara, Doani Emanuela Bertain, Jane Martino, Lan Yu, Butet Manurung, Sonia Peronaci, Tijen Onaran and Lena Mahfouf.
