Ministry Of Defense: KRI Cakra-401 Strengthens The Defense Of The Republic Of Indonesia After Overhaul

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Defense conveyed that the KRI Cakra-401 submarine, which has completed an overhaul at the PT PAL Indonesia shipyard in Surabaya, East Java, will immediately strengthen the ability of the Indonesian Navy to maintain the integrity and sovereignty of the Republic of Indonesia.

The Ministry of Defense appreciates and thanks the parties involved in the comprehensive repair of KRI Cakra-401, including PT PAL Indonesia and the Overhaul Task Force KRI Cakra-401, said Head of the Defense Facilities Agency (Kabaranahan) of Ministry of Defense, TNI (Army) Young Marshal Yusuf Jauhari.

General Director of PT PAL Indonesia (Persero), Kaharuddin Djenod, officially handed over the KRI Cakra-401 which has undergone a complete overhaul to the Director-General of Defense Forces of the Ministry of Defense, Admiral Bambang Irwanto, in Surabaya on Monday, February 21.

Admiral Bambang represented the Head of Defense Facilities Agency of the Ministry of Defense at the KRI Cakra-401 Submarine Operation Handover ceremony in Surabaya.

Defense Facilities Agency, in his speech read by Admiral Bambang during the handover, said that the "overhaul" of the KRI Cakra-401 would not only strengthen the defense of the Republic of Indonesia but also support the growth of the domestic defense industry.

"This is in line with the government's program, realizing a superior domestic defense industry, advancing Indonesia that can compete in the international shipping industry," Head of Defense Facilities Agency said in his remarks as quoted from a written release by the Ministry of Defense quoted by Antara, Monday, February 21.

The overall repair of the KRI Cakra-401 submarine includes replacing the hull, improving the mechanical and electrical systems, improving the sensor and detection system, as well as improving weaponry including the torpedo fire control system.

The series of tests after repairs began on September 11, 2021, when the ship underwent a Sea Acceptance Test (SAT) in the northern waters of Situbondo, East Java.

In the test phase, KRI Cakra-401 was able to maneuver at maximum speed both above and below the water surface.

KRI Cakra-401 made by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW), Germany again underwent a test dive in the waters of Panarukan, Situbondo on October 10, 2021. The dive test is the main stage that determines the feasibility of a submarine.

As a result, KRI Cakra-401 was able to achieve the operational feasibility indicator and was declared ready to return to duty.
