Man Utd Vs Middlesbrough: Lost On Penalties, The Reds Knocked Out Of The FA Cup

JAKARTA - Manchester United (MU) was eliminated in the fourth round of the FA Cup after being defeated by Middlesbrough on penalties 7-8 (1-1) at Old Trafford on Saturday morning WIB.

Launching Antara, MU scored the first goal thanks to Jadon Sancho's goal in the first half. The Boro also managed to equalize through the actions of Matt Crooks in the second half.

In the penalty shootout, MU's defeat occurred after young player Anthony Elanga's shot failed to nest into The Boro's goal.

In this tight match, MU had a good chance in the second minute. Jadon Sancho met a wild ball and his shot just hit the crossbar. Bruno Fernandes failed to find the rebound.

In the 6th minute, Cristiano Ronaldo's overhead kick was easily saved by goalkeeper Joe Lumley because his contact with the ball was not perfect.

Manchester United got a penalty in the 19th minute after Paul Pogba was fouled by Anfernee Dijksteel. Ronaldo stepped forward as the executor and targeted the left corner of the goal, but his shot went wide.

MU made up for the missed penalty with a goal in the 25th minute. Getting a pass from Bruno Fernandes, Sancho opened the gap to the defenders before firing a shot that rounded the goalkeeper. The score becomes 1-0.

After the break, MU still dominated the game. However, Marcus Rashford's golden opportunity in the 53rd minute failed to be used as a goal.

The failure had to be paid dearly for MU because Middlesbrough scored a goal through Crooks' action in the 64th minute. Duncan Watmore found the ball on the left in the box, then passed it to the right and it was finished by Matt Crooks.

MU had protested this goal because they considered that there was a handball by Watmore. Replays showed the ball did hit his hand shortly after bouncing off the ground. The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) reviewed it, but the referee ruled the goal was legal on the grounds of accident.

MU was trying to score the winning goal in the remaining matches. Fernandes got a golden opportunity in the 72nd minute, unfortunately, his shot still hit the goal post. The 1-1 score lasted until normal time ended so the match had to be continued into extra time.

In the extra round, MU tried to continue to press the Middlesbrough defense. However, they are still struggling to convert chances into goals.

Meanwhile, Middlesbrough also had several dangerous opportunities. Unfortunately, nothing was created from either team during and the winner had to be decided on penalties.

In this penalty shootout, five kickers from each team successfully carried out their duties perfectly. When entering the sudden death system, Elanga's penalty shot bounced over the bar, and Middlesbrough was entitled to come out as the winner.
