Wild Elephants Ruin Palm Oil Land Residents In West Aceh, BKSDA Asked To Intervene

ACEH - A herd of wild elephants on Sunday morning was reported to have ransacked oil palm plantations belonging to residents in Paya Meugendrang and Krueng Bhee villages, East Woyla District, West Aceh Regency.

"Reports we have received from the community suggest that the impact of this wild elephant rampage has caused the oil palm trees belonging to farmers to be damaged", said West Aceh City People's Representative Council (DPRK) member, Ahmad Yani, as quoted by Antara on Sunday, January 23.

He said the disturbance of the wild elephants occurred at night and caused most of the oil palm plantations belonging to the community in two villages in Woyla Timur District, West Aceh to be damaged.

However, the total loss suffered by the community due to disturbance from the wild animals is still being collected this afternoon.

Ahmad Yani also mentioned that the disturbance of wild elephants that occurred in Woyla Timur District, West Aceh Regency had occurred since the past week.

To avoid conflict between humans and wild elephants, he hopes that the Human Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) of Aceh Province will come to West Aceh to take immediate action.

"We hope that the BKSDA will immediately overcome the disturbance of wild elephants that have occurred so far in West Aceh so that potential conflicts between elephants and the community can be avoided", said Ahmad Yani.
