For The Next 3 Days, BMKG Asks NTT Residents To Beware Of Heavy Rain With Lightning

KUPANG - Head of the El Tari Kupang Meteorological Station, Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Agung Sudiono Abadi appealed to residents in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) to be aware of extreme weather in the form of heavy rain accompanied by lightning for the next three days.

"The potential for extreme weather in the form of heavy rain accompanied by lightning can cause hydrometeorological disasters in the form of floods, flash floods and landslides as well as the danger of lightning strikes," he said in Kupang, Antara, Thursday, January 6.

He said this was related to weather early warnings in the NTT region during January 6-8 2022. Agung said that the potential for rain accompanied by lightning for the next few days was spread over 22 regencies/cities throughout NTT.

In addition to heavy rain accompanied by lightning, he said there is also the potential for strong winds of short duration that need to be watched out for because they can have an impact on falling trees, billboards, and other public facilities.

"Therefore, the public must continue to increase vigilance to minimize the impact of this extreme weather," he said.

Agung further said that the NTT region is currently entering the peak of the rainy season which can have an impact on the emergence of bad weather.

The growth of convective clouds in NTT is increasing, resulting in heavy rain accompanied by lightning, strong winds, and cyclones, and even hail.

Residents are advised not to leave their homes or drive vehicles during heavy rains. On the other hand, he said, residents also need to secure important goods or documents to be safe from the threat of disaster.

Agung invites the public to continue to follow the development of weather information from BMKG through a number of available channels such as telephone (0380) 881613 or whatsapp 081139404264, website meteoeltari.com, email met_kupang@yahoo.com or via the BMKG INFO mobile app.
