The Polemic Of Eijkman's Merger To BRIN Leads To Layoffs Of 100 Scientists?
JAKARTA - Commission VII of the House of Representatives has raised its voice regarding the chaotic fusion of a number of research institutions including the Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology (LBM) into the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). Where there are 120 scientists and staff at LBM Eijkman non-PNS who will be laid off without severance pay.
Deputy Chairman of Commission VII DPR Eddy Soeparno said that after BRIN was formed, all functions and roles of institutions under the Ministry of Research and Technology (Kemenristek) were merged. Such as BPPT, LIPI, and also LBM Eijkman which all merged into BRIN, including the researchers.

Commission VII of the DPR hopes that researchers from LBM Eijkman can be accommodated to institutions that will indeed become a new unit, namely the Eijkman Center for Molecular Biology Research (PRBM). Because producing scientists takes time, investment, and experience.
"We ask that researchers remain empowered, because developing researchers, creating researchers takes time, requires investment, and requires experience to get researchers and it's not easy to get," he said.
Eddy also hopes that researchers can be accommodated and accommodated in the new unit. No researchers, let alone productive ones, were left or laid off.
Even if there is, the PAN politician considers that it should be communicated and coordinated with Commission VII DPD as a partner of BRIN. It will monitor and ensure that scientists from LBM Eijkman are empowered.
"Sure, we will definitely monitor it. Because we come back again, to create researchers is not easy, it can't be 24 hours, it takes time, they have to be educated, they have to get research experience, so if we leave them, let alone lay off, especially those who are productive, very unfortunate. That is one of our focuses so that researchers do not leave and must be discussed with us as partners of BRIN, "said Eddy.
The Head of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Laksana Tri Handoko explained the dismissal of a number of scientists at the Eijkman Institute after being integrated into BRIN.
Eijkman itself was officially integrated into BRIN in September 2021. The institution has also changed its name to the Eijkman Center for Molecular Biology Research (PRBM). After the integration, it was reported that more than 100 Eijkman scientists were fired without severance pay.
"Yes, of course, it's not true. Except for those who don't want to choose one of our options. Of course, we can't force it either," said Laksana, Sunday, January 2.
Laksana then explained the status of the Eijkman Institute. According to him, the public needs to understand that the Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology (LBME) is not an official government institution.
He said the agency had the status of a project unit at the Ministry of Research and Technology (Kemenristek).
"This causes, so far PNS (Civil Civil Service) researchers at LBME cannot be appointed as full researchers, and have the status of administrative staff," he explained.
Laksana continued, after the Ministry of Research and Technology and 4 Non-Ministerial Government Institutions (LPNK) were integrated under BRIN on September 1, 2021, the LBME status had been institutionalized into an official work unit called PRBM Eijkman.
The institution, he said, was under the Life Sciences Research Organization.
"With this status, we can appoint researchers at LBME as researchers with all their financial rights," said Laksana.
