Latest Earthquake Info In Maluku: Not To Cause Damage In Three Villages In Damer

JAKARTA - An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 which occurred on Thursday morning in the east of Tiakur City, Southwest Maluku Regency, Maluku Province, did not cause damage to three villages in Damer District, Southwest Maluku Regency.

Damer subdistrict head, Jon Mose, when contacted from Ambon, Thursday, said that he had checked the condition of three villages on Damer Island, namely Kehli, Wulur, and Kumur Kuwae villages.

"From the results of the temporary confirmation in the three villages, there was no damage", he said as quoted by Antara on Thursday, December 30.

Jon said that the condition of the other four villages could not be known because telecommunications access to the area was disrupted.

He said that when an earthquake occurred, most of the residents in his area immediately tried to save themselves by leaving their homes.

"When an earthquake occurs, residents immediately leave their houses and run towards the mountains as happened in the second week of December 2021", he said referring to an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 that occurred in the northeast of Maluku Barat Baya on December 16, 2021.

According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 - updated from the previous 7.4 - occurred on Thursday at 01.25 WIB at approximately 132 km east of Tiakur City, Southwest Maluku Regency.

The earthquake, whose center was in the sea at a depth of 182 km, was felt in Tiakur, Tepa, Saumlaki, Tual, Kupang, Alor, Rote, Malacca, Atambua, Sumba, to Raja Ampat, and Sorong in West Papua.
