Komnas HAM: Religious Tolerance Improves, But There Are 3 Homeworks Including The Establishment Of Houses Of Worship For Minorities

JAKARTA - Commissioner of the National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) Beka Ulung Hapsara said tolerance between religious communities in the country continues to improve from year to year.

However, the government still has tasks to complete, including the issue of establishing houses of worship for minority groups.

Based on the Religious Harmony Index issued by the Ministry of Religion, tolerance in society continues to increase. Beka even said that the percentage of tolerance between people this year reached 72.39 percent, an increase from 2020 which was only around 67.46.

"This means that in general the condition (tolerance) of religious people in Indonesia is improving, but indeed there are still homework that must be addressed in this regard. Especially the 3 big homeworks," said Beka in the presentation of Komnas HAM's Year End Notes conducted online, Tuesday, December 28.

Beka detailed the three major homeworks, namely the prohibition of the establishment of places of worship, the prohibition of worship, and matters related to intolerance on social media.

"Regarding the establishment of places of worship, there are still some places where friends of the minority are still having trouble building mosques or churches or other places of worship," he said. Beka.

While related to the prohibition of worship, he said, this happened in Lampung and Jambi. Beka said that at that time there were residents who were forbidden to do Christmas worship.

"I think this is still a joint PR. The first is related to the issue of intolerance and violent extremism," he concluded.
