Throughout 2021, There Are 31 Turtles, 7 Dolphins And 1 Dead Whale Shark In Bali Waters

DENPASAR - The Center for Coastal and Marine Resources Management (BPSPL) Denpasar, Bali, recorded several dead marine life in Bali Waters throughout 2021.

It was recorded that 31 turtles died, 7 dolphins of various types, 1 white shark, 1 whale shark, 1 Mola-mola fish, and 1 dead saw snout in Bali waters.

"So from that data. The records that we collect are various (cause of death) most of which we know after we necropsy", said Head of BPSPL Denpasar, Permana Yudiarso on Monday, December 27.

However, when totaled throughout 2021 in the Denpasar BPSPL working area, such as in the waters of Bali, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), and East Java, there were 6 dead whale sharks were recorded, 5 dugongs died, 71 whales died, 102 turtles died, 39 dolphins died and 1 sunfish died.

The occurrence of strandings of protected marine life in Indonesian waters, especially in the Denpasar BPSPL working area in 2021, is still common. According to experts, the stranding of marine life is caused by noise pollution and the use of underwater sonar which interferes with navigation systems, hunting or fishing activities and because of injury or illness.

In addition, from the necropsy results, some of the turtle's bodies found trash or fishing line to death, and some because of the extreme weather the turtles were stranded and died.

"In terms of turtles, we (find) fishing line, there is garbage. That's what we found out, but the problem is that many of them go unnoticed. That, only a few of the rest are just guesses that we know that in December there was bad weather so he was carried away by the current to the sea is the cause, the average is like that", Permana added.

Meanwhile, for the death of dolphins, necropsies have not been carried out. But statistically, they die from illness or from being entangled in fishing nets.

"So far, we haven't had a lot of necropsies. This statistic (results) could be because he's sick, we bury most of the dead and we don't know what caused him because he's already dead. It's a bit difficult for extreme extremes to be the cause because technically he can overcome it, allegedly because he got entangled in fishing nets or was sick", said Permana.

Meanwhile, for whales that died when they took samples at Mertasari Beach, Denpasar, after necropsy, it turned out that they had a fishing line in their digestive tract.

"The whales we found on Mertasari Beach turned out to have the fishing line in their digestion. Then, there were some because they were sick", he explained.

As for the whale shark, there are two possibilities of death, namely because it gets entangled in fishing nets or because it chases its prey to the coast, then becomes stranded and dies.

"Whale sharks are usually entangled in fishing nets or because they are chasing prey and they breathe humanly when they approach coastal waters it is difficult to move. When they are in shallow water they are stranded and die", Permana said.
