Suggesting The Use Of VAR In The 2020 AFF Cup, Shin Tae-yong: Even If The Players Play At 100 Percent, The Referee Can Ruin Everything

JAKARTA - The Indonesian national team coach, Shin Tae-yong also suggested the use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in the 2020 AFF Cup semifinals. This was stated by Shin Tae-yong after going through the first leg.

In a press conference ahead of the second leg on Friday 24 December, the South Korean coach highlighted the leadership of the referee in the first leg. The main thing that was highlighted was the incident of Ricky Kambuaya being dropped in the forbidden box.

In addition to highlighting the course of Indonesia's match against Singapore, Shin Tae-yong also highlighted the Thai-Vietnamese duel which was also felt to be lame.

"It (the incident in the first leg) was 100 percent a penalty but a free-kick was awarded. Vietnam should have also got a penalty, but it wasn't awarded," said Shin Tae-yong.

"To improve the quality of this tournament, it is necessary to improve more quality, referees and also VAR," said Shin Tae-yong added.

On the same occasion, Shin Tae-yong assessed that the presence of VAR would minimize referee errors because there was an opportunity to review incidents that occurred on the field.

"In my opinion (in the 2020 AFF semi-finals) we really need VAR. As humans, we can't see exactly 100 percent. Even if players appear 100 percent, the referee can destroy everything," he emphasized.

Indonesia will face Singapore in the second leg of the AFF Cup semifinal which will be held on Saturday 25 December. The previous Indonesia vs Singapore duel ended in a 1-1 draw, so the chances of both teams to qualify for the AFF Cup final are still as great.
