PPP Ensures Election Of PBNU General Chair Is Neutral, No Political Party Directions
JAKARTA - The election of the general chairman of the Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Board (PBNU) will soon be held at the 34th Congress which will be held in Lampung on December 22-23.
The candidates for PBNU General Chair are incumbent KH Said Aqil Siroj, PBNU Katib Aam Yahya Cholil Staquf and former PBNU Deputy Chairperson KH As'ad Said Ali.
The United Development Party (PPP) ensures that the election agenda for the PBNU Chairman is neutral. Even though PPP has become a forum for NU or Nahdliyyin cadres in addition to the National Awakening Party (PKB).
PPP Deputy Chairperson Arsul Sani emphasized that his party did not provide specific directions regarding the election.
"No, let it be the decision of the Muktamirin," said Arsul to reporters, Wednesday, December 22.
According to the Deputy Chair of the MPR, it is inappropriate for outside parties to intervene at the NU Congress. Moreover, these outsiders are political parties.
"It is not appropriate for political parties and other forces outside NU to play in the NU Congress," said Arsul.

Even the congress participants, said Arsul, would not be happy if their celebration was intervened by outsiders. "The Muktamirin themselves will certainly not want to be directed to choose certain candidates by external parties," he said.
It is known that the main agenda of the 34th NU Congress, namely the election of the General Chairperson of PBNU and Rais Aam, will soon be held. Rais Aam will be selected through the Ahlul Halli Wal Aqdi (AHWA) system.
"The election for Rais Aam was carried out by Ahlul Halli Wal Aqdi (AHWA) which consisted of 9 elderly clerics. AHWA was proposed by the muktamirin," Secretary of the Steering Committee of the NU Congress, Asrorun Niam, told reporters, Tuesday, November 21.
Meanwhile, the general chairman is directly elected by the congress or congress participants. The election was held after going through a series of processes.
"If the general chairman is elected directly after going through the screening and nomination stages. After obtaining a candidate who meets the requirements, Rais Aam's approval is asked to be elected," he continued.
