BMKG Reminds People To Beware Of Extreme Weather At The End Of The Year
JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) asked the public to increase their awareness of potential geo-hydrometeorological disasters ahead of Christmas 2021 and New Year 2022.
This alert includes medium to high rainfall in December 2021-January 2022.
"The prospect/prediction of rainfall in the Indonesian region in December 2021 and January 2022, where there are Christmas and New Year periods, shows that rainfall is generally in the medium to high category (100-500 mm per month)," said BMKG Head Dwikorita. Karnawati in a written statement quoted Antara, Tuesday, December 2.
In addition, Dwikorita also advised ministry/institutional partners, local governments and stakeholders, as well as the community to continue to monitor developments in weather, climate, and earthquakes, as well as early warnings for extreme conditions such as weather, ocean waves, climate, and tsunamis) from the BMKG through various channels. official.
"It is necessary to ensure that information related to meteorological, climatological, earthquake and tsunami conditions can be accessed or received quickly and understood by transportation operators, stakeholders, related sectors, and the community," said Dwikorita.
Dwikorita said that unlike predictable weather conditions, the occurrence of earthquakes and tsunamis could not be predicted.
However, the potential hazard can be modeled using the worst-case scenario as a reference for mitigation efforts. In this case, BMKG has mapped the hazard level of most of the tsunami-prone beaches in Indonesia.
Then regarding the development of news regarding the potential for a tsunami in Cilegon, BMKG emphasized that it did not intend to provide a prediction that a tsunami would occur during the Christmas 2021 and New Year 2022 periods.
"Cilegon is just an example, one of the areas that is prone to and has the potential for a tsunami like other areas in Indonesia that have the potential and historical record of tsunamis," he said.
Dwikorita said that earthquakes and tsunamis can occur anytime and anywhere, but it is not possible to be certain/predicted exactly when they will occur.
"The BMKG tsunami catalog records show that since 1608 there have been more than 246 tsunamis in the territory of Indonesia, so we all need to be vigilant," said Dwikorita.
