The South Sulawesi MUI Said About A Teenage Girl From Junior High School Applying For A Male In Pinrang With A Panic Alias Rp500 Million Dowry

MAKASSAR - The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) of South Sulawesi, responded to the phenomenon of a woman proposing to a man in Pinrang Regency to become a public conversation because it was viral on social media.

"Actually, it's not a problem, as long as the prospective groom continues to give a dowry, for example a set of prayer tools," said Secretary of the MUI for South Sulawesi, Muammar Bakri in Makassar, quoted by Antara, Friday, November 26.

In connection with this unusual phenomenon, the groom usually gives a dowry or panaik (shopping) money to the prospective bride according to the traditional Bugis Makassar tradition.

If a woman or her family proposes to a man for herself, it is permissible in Islamic law.

This is as has been done by the companions of the prophet, who came to pious people to offer their daughters or sisters for marriage.

Then there is the dowry. Basically, the obligation to prepare a dowry at the time of marriage is borne by men, because it is the obligation of men as husbands to become women's rights as wives.

The evidence regarding the dowry has been regulated by the word of Allah SWT in the Qur'an Surah An-Nisa verse four which means, Give a dowry (dowry) to the woman (whom you marry) as a gift willingly.

Then if they hand over to you some of the dowry with pleasure, then eat (take) the gift (as food) which is delicious and with good results.

If a woman gives her property to a man to be used as a dowry, including spending money (according to Bugis Makassar tradition), then it is called no problem.

However, it is still obligatory for men to prepare a dowry even if the value is small, as is commonly done in society, such as the dowry for a set of prayer tools.

Dowry is an obligation as a form of responsibility for the seriousness of a man to become a husband as an offering given to get a woman halal.

"This will also make it easier for men who do not have property to marry with the pleasure of women receiving a small dowry," added Muammar.

Previously, the phenomenal incident went viral on social media, the woman's family gave a dowry to the male family in the amount of Rp. 500 million, accompanied by two cows and two hundred racks of eggs during the application procession in Marawi Village, Tiroan District, Pinrang Regency, South Sulawesi, Monday 22 November 2021.

For the wedding process, the family has not planned in the near future, because the prospective bride is still in junior high school and the groom is currently studying in Jakarta. The plan is that the bride and groom will be married in three or four years after graduation.
