Israeli Police Shoot Dead Palestinians

JERUSALEM - A Palestinian gunman was shot dead by Israeli police after killing one person and wounding three others in Jerusalem's Old City, a police spokesman said.

The second incident in four days in Jerusalem took place near one of the gates to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, the third holiest site for Muslims. Jews honor the site as a relic of two ancient temples.

A police spokesman described the man as an East Jerusalem resident. He said the man was carrying a submachine gun.

Two of those shot were civilians, one of whom died, he said, adding that the other two injured were police.

Israel captured the Old City and other areas of East Jerusalem in the 1967 Middle East war and occupied them, an act that has never received international recognition.

Palestinians want East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state. Israel claims the entire city as their eternal undivided capital.
