Komnas HAM Investigate Allegations Of Torture In Prisoners In Yogyakarta Prison

JAKARTA - The National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) is currently investigating and conducting monitoring related to the alleged case of torture inmates at the Yogyakarta Narcotics Correctional Institution (Lapas).

"We have received complaints, including responses from various media to communicating with companions and victims," said Commissioner for Monitoring and Investigation of Komnas HAM Mohammad Choirul Anam, quoted by Antara, Wednesday, November 3.

First, said Anam, Komnas HAM had a difficult time confirming in detail whether or not the alleged torture incident was true. It refers to how the event occurred, the date, and the perpetrator.

"However, we suspect that this incident did occur," said Anam.

Second, if it is true that the incident occurred, Komnas HAM will encourage firm action.

"The detailed story that we got was far from the guiding principle," he said.

Therefore, Komnas HAM will conduct an investigation and ask the Directorate General of Corrections, the Head of the Yogyakarta Narcotics Prison, and the Ministry of Law and Human Rights to be open.

According to him, open access to the case is very important. There are at least two things, namely what is scheduled to improve the internal reform of the penitentiary going well.

The second is so that inhumane treatment should not happen again in prisons as a place for fostering people who are serving a period of punishment.

"If the friends of the Director General of PAS (correctional) want, let's join the investigation together," he said.
